ENERGY SECTOR:

Finding young employees with the right attitude can be hard.

We want to help.

The energy transition in the North East is creating major opportunities.

But there’s a problem:

It can be hard to hire young people with the right attitude.

Those who are reliable and committed, with a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in the work.

It’s not because those young people don’t exist.

It’s because it’s difficult to identify them, and for them to be able to find you

Over the past four years, we’ve worked with thousands of young people and partnered with dozens of businesses across Scotland, from major energy companies to local SMEs.

We design practical experiences that help young people develop the abilities that employers value.

Those experiences also make it easier to find young people with the right attitude. And we can help connect them with employers who want exactly that mindset.

It’s a win-win. Businesses find talent, and young people find a career where they can grow and contribute.

WHAT WE’RE DOING NEXT

THE REVERSE CAREERS FAIR

Do you think traditional careers fairs are a bit rubbish?

We do too

  • Participants wander around.

  • Employers stand behind tables hoping someone approaches.

  • Nobody really knows what to say.

  • It’s not working for either side.

So let’s do it differently

Powering Futures are working with around 1000 young people (16-25) in the North East

What we’re doing with them is:

  • They use AI tools to find the roles that they have real interest in.

  • They talk to people and research employers beforehand.

  • By the time they come to the in-person event they know who they want to talk to and why.

Through this process 1000 people comes down closer to 150. We don’t ‘maximise numbers’ - we ‘maximise quality’

Because that's a win for them, and a win for you.

What will happen at the event?

The students arrive prepared. They've explored the roles, done their research, and know who they want to speak with. We’ll start by setting the scene for the event.

Then it's breakout rooms. 20-minute conversations organised by role. Everyone interested in design engineering goes to that session. Want to learn about welding? There's a session for that. Commercial roles? Another room.

Conversations not presentations. We’ve done this before and when you put the right people together, they want to talk to each other. Employers don’t need to prepare lengthy presentations (which is good news for you and the participants).

Everyone in every session has actively chosen to be there. That changes the experience for everybody.

The biggest benefit to you?

You’ll be meeting young people with the attitude you’re looking for. And when they’re applying for jobs they’ll be thinking of you.

What is the commitment?

Examples of the types of roles we are supporting are in the drop downs. If your organisation works in these areas then we’d like to hear from you. The ask for the Reverse Careers Fair is:

  • A 30 min conversation with us beforehand to understand your organisation and the types of roles you can talk about

  • Your representative to attend the 2 hour event to have conversations with interested young people in breakout rooms (it’s conversations, not presentations)

  • The event is in central Aberdeen, 29th Jan 18:30-20:30

  • There will be roughly 150 attendees (all identified through our processes)

    • Mechanical

    • Electrical

    • Design

    • Welding

    • Trades

    • Site Management

    • Architecture

    • Accounting and Finance

    • Commercial Analysis

    • PR and Marketing

    • Project Management
