SSEN Transmission partners with Powering Futures!
SSEN Transmission has announced a new strategic partnership with Powering Futures to inspire and equip the next generation of talent into careers in the energy sector.
Pioneering education-to-workforce skills provider Powering Futures brings together school pupils and businesses through its Challenge Programme, where participants engage in hands-on learning - collaborating to find a solution to a sustainability challenge that has been set by industry, and developing their skills in innovation, problem solving, networking and sustainability.
Now in its fourth year, the Powering Futures Challenge Programme is embedded in over 125 schools Scotland-wide, and this year over 3,500 pupils will work towards earning an SCQF level 6 qualification - equivalent to a Higher - at the end of the process.
Industry partners are uniquely embedded in the delivery of the Powering Futures programme in schools, which is designed to create a pipeline of talent into businesses involved in delivering the transition to net zero. The new strategic partnership between Powering Futures and SSEN Transmission will further bridge the gap between education and the energy industry, helping students to explore future career pathways in Scotland’s rapidly evolving energy landscape, with SSEN Transmission volunteers supporting classrooms who are undertaking the Powering Futures Challenge Programme.
SSEN Transmission’s commitment to building a workforce that will meet the demands of the evolving energy sector is clear, with hundreds of diverse roles emerging across the business in the years ahead, and the company’s work anticipated to support up to 37,000 jobs in the coming years too. Raising awareness of these opportunities, particularly in northern communities where much of the company’s work will be undertaken, is key to ensuring local talent is part of the UK’s net zero journey.
Steph O’Donnell, Strategic Workforce Planning Manager at SSEN Transmission said:
“As we deliver the infrastructure needed for a net zero future, it’s vital that we also invest in the people who will build, operate and lead that future. Powering Futures offers young people a real window into the opportunities in our sector, and gives them a platform to see how they can be part of something that truly matters.
“This programme is a fantastic way to connect with young people in the communities where we live and work. Whether it's engineering, project management, environmental planning or digital innovation, the energy sector needs a wide range of skills - and we want to show students that there’s a place for them in it.”
Jennifer Tempany, Co-Founder of Powering Futures, said:
“We’re thrilled to have SSEN Transmission on board. As an organisation at the forefront of the UK’s net zero transition, their support reinforces the importance of preparing young people with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in the energy sector - a major growth area for Scotland. Together, we’re not just inspiring future careers, but we’re also helping to build the workforce that will deliver a more sustainable future".
